Ngā Waka - New Zealand's Ferries

The Interislander was originally branded with the dolphin logo back in 1986. It was based on Pelorus Jack, the dolphin that for more than 20 years, in the early 1900's, accompanied ships across Cook Straight.

The brief for the new identity and ship livery required that PJ remain central to the brand, but with a more New Zealand dimension to invoke a greater sense of national pride. The 'dolfern', as it is now known, combines the free-spirited leaping dolphin with a fern-like wake to cement the Interislander as a real Kiwi icon.
